The Cowboy Academy Series

What's sweeter than chocolate? A second chance at love!

Single mom Tillie Powell has spent enough time getting over Keith Morgan and his misguided marriage proposal six years earlier. All she wants now is to be the perfect maid of honor to her cousin, proving to her uncle that she’s ready for the ranch manager job, which will support her daughter, Shay, in the process. But best man Keith suddenly seems to be everywhere she is, helping with wedding tasks and annoyingly winning over Shay. As the big event draws closer, Tillie must decide if she’s finally ready to hear Keith’s side of the story—and let his love in.

Excerpt:

Monday, 5 days before the wedding…

“Hello and goodbye, Keith Morgan.” Matilda Powell took the arm of her ex-boyfriend’s jean jacket and hauled all six feet of brown-haired, blue-eyed cowboy away from the check-in desk at the Ambling Horse Prairie Resort.

The high end dude ranch was an hour’s drive west of Dallas, Texas, in the blustery prairie. But with its timber beams, shiny hardwood floors and twelve-foot wide, two-story tall, rock fireplace, it looked as if it had been plucked from an extravagant mountain ski resort in Colorado.

“Well, hello, darlin’.” Keith planted his cowboy boots on those fancy wood planks and tipped back his black cowboy hat, taking in Tillie with tempting blue eyes while flashing that captivating smile of his.

To which I’m immune.

Or perhaps not totally…

A flutter in Tillie’s stomach contradicted her so-called immunity, the same way an occasional, nostalgic memory of Keith contradicted Tillie’s statement to her friends that—as a couple—they were done and dusted.

And why wouldn’t they be through? It had been six years since Tillie had turned down Keith’s proposal of marriage. Six years since he’d walked out without hearing why she’d said no. And since that small word she’d uttered, he’d ghosted her.

That man and his foolish pride don’t deserve to make my heart flutter.

Not even if his dark brown hair curled temptingly at the base of his neck.

Or if his smile had a mesmerizing, easy-going quality to it.

Or if his bright-eyed gaze held hers intensely, the way it used to before they kissed.

Tillie ground her boot heel into the hardwood.

No fluttering allowed!

The Story Behind the Story

Sometimes a couple just walks onto my page fully formed and ready to charm me with their dreams and their love of horses and baby goats! Keith and Tillie were one such couple (I can only wish I had more such charmers).

This is in the Cowboy Academy series, mostly set in Clementine. But my editor enjoys getting out of town in a run of 12 books, so this is one of those romances not set in Clementine. I’ve lived in several states, including Texas, where I did attend corporate retreats held at fancy dude ranches. And yet, there were snakes and bugs…just like in this book. But if you can’t laugh at your fears…well, you’re going to find it hard to laugh through life! Enjoy!
