Dredge Up These Songs - the sappy, the
stirring, the classics!
If you've
ever seen The Pirates of the Caribbean, you'll know that the music is very
moving. I wrote The Family Man
while listening to that action
packed soundtrack, as well as an old classic: Boston's 'A Man I'll
Never Be.' The 3rd book in the series, tentatively titled "The
Surprised Groom", was written to more modern music. I fell into
Maroon 5's debut CD, as well as listening repeatedly to Hoobastank's 'The
Reason' (which has disappeared from my music library for some unknown
reason...hhhmmm).
While
writing Getting Married Again, I sat at my computer for hours,
listening to a mix of haunting melodies, love songs from the male
perspective and classic rock. And then there were the car rides...on
and on for miles (we live pretty much in the middle of nowhere). I
think my family wanted the stereo to break. See if you agree.
Jackson's
Themes
-
Samwise the Brave,
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. This song might last a whopping
2 minutes. If you've seen The Two Towers, it's the piece of music
that plays right after Sam saves Frodo from a dragon-like creature, as
he's trying to convince Frodo not to quit. It's a haunting piece
of music that has new meaning for my family after hearing it play
continuously, hour after hour. I wrote a lot of the deadly fire
scenes to this music, trying to find hope when there seemed to be
none.

Come
On, Come On, Come On, On a Day Like Today, Brian Adams.
Likewise, the refrain of this song "we're gonna make it home
tonight...everything's gonna be all right," really pulled me.
Jackson keeps thinking everything's going to be okay, but it's not.
-
Don't
Want to Lose You Now, Millenium, The Backstreet Boys. Okay,
sappy, sappy. But every once in awhile they move past the
cliché.
Lexie's
Themes
-
Independent Women,
Charlie's Angels Theme, Destiny's Child. Lexie could have
really been a pill - divorcing the man she loved because he wasn't
treating her right. I had to listen to uplifting, girl-power,
heart-pumping music to keep her just a bit fiesty - 'cause boy, she
wanted to roll sometimes.
-
Miss
Independent, Thankful, Kelly Clarkson. Note how surprised Miss
Independent is when she realizes she's in love. Lexie felt much
the same way - and fought admitting she was still in love with Jackson
for quite some time.
-
Fighter, Stripped,
Christina Aguilera. Here's a woman who is stronger than ever
because someone has done her wrong. No matter what, she's going to
be okay. Her heart may be broken, but she'll make it.
-
Claire
de Lune. Okay, if you said, "Hum a few bars of Claire de
Lune," I'd be like, "What?" I love the piece, but can never
remember the name. If you've ever seen Ocean's Eleven (yum!),
think of the music that plays while they watch the fountains in front of
the Bellagio dance at the very end. One Fine Day - another George
Clooney classic - also played the classic while he carried Michelle
Pfeiffer through the puddle in Central Park. It's whimsical, yet
powerful. A beautiful balance of femininity and strength.
Love does triumph over all.
